[Abstract tratto dalla rivista]

The Restoration was defined as the process of re-establishing sovereign power in Europe after the French Revolution and Napoleon’s defeat. The Congress of Vienna (1814-1815) developed inside and in some ways at the beginning of it. In fact, the great powers, in order to redesign the fate of Europe, met in the autumn of 1814 with the aim of restoring a system of reciprocal balances between the states that would forget the long instability caused by the French Revolution and the Napoleonic Empire. In Vienna the leaders of Europe tried to go back a quarter of a century but immediately realized that the passage of time could not be stopped any more than the evolution of history can be stopped. One of the issues discussed in Vienna was the succession of the House of Savoy. In fact it was at that chronological height that happened, due to the extinction of the main branch, the passage of the crown to the Savoy-Carignan. This contribution consists of a first general part dealing with the sunset of the "Ancien Régime" and the subsequent opening of the Congress in Vienna. It was in that very place that with the timely action carried out by the Sardinian diplomats it was possible to guarantee a continuity to the Savoy dynasty that saw the young Carlo Alberto rise in 1831. The second part of this article examines the figure of the prince of Carignano who was one of the most complex and enigmatic characters in the history of Savoy. In fact, despite an initial distrust on the part of king Carlo Felice, given by the prince’s unfamiliarity with the meaning and symbols of the Savoy monarchy as well as his, it seems, involvement of the riots of '21, was the sovereign on 24 April 1831, before his ministers, to recognize the young Carlo Alberto as his heir and successor. It was then with the coming to the throne of the cadet branch of Savoy-Carignano with a character like that of Carlo Alberto that happened a turning point in the history of the dynasty and the Savoy States. In fact, the young prince developed a national and Italian policy by making disappear the reality of the state on which the Savoy dynasty had reigned for eight centuries.[Abstract appeared in the Journal]
