This contribution deals with the European single market and it can be basically divided into two parts. The first part - corresponding to paragraphs 2 and 3 - attempts to underline the high degree of specificity of measures capable of influencing the complete establishment of the single market and the heterogeneity of issues which, directly or indirectly, may affect the full achievement of this objective. This will be emphasized through the analysis of two recent cases brought to the attention of the EU Court of Justice, both concerning issues related to the cross-border mobility of workers. It will especially emerge that the full implementation of the single market depends not only on a harmonization of national legislative frameworks, but also on the adoption of specific measures - regulatory, administrative-contractual and jurisdictional - concerning heterogeneous economic-legal sectors. The second part, corresponding to paragraph 4, takes account of the (positive) macroeconomic effects of the single market system on the economies of the Member States, with particular reference to the effects on Gross Domestic Product (GDP).[Abstract appeared in the Journal]
