Legal Medicine is a polyhedric part of human knowledge, that finds its unifying identity in the method and in the approach to the competent issues rather than in its practical scopes. Its classical definition is linked to the investigation of causal relationships in the bio-medical field, but Legal Medicine has faced several radical changes in the last years. Failing to define in a clear way its frontiers exposes in particular the risk of eclipsing the evolutive perspectives fundamental to preserve its centrality. In conclusion, the main challenge seems to be fighting the status quo, redefining the paradigm of the error in the light of the new technologies and fitting in the production chain of the artificial intelligence to envision the future.[Abstract appeared in the Journal]
